Last week we had an amazing Makery Masterpiece event. During this event we talked about Ancient Roman Mosaics and how they were used during this time period. Makery visitors were also able to create their own mosaic out of clay and a variety of beans. It was interesting to see how the different shapes and colors of beans could be used to created amazing patterns!
One of the best things about the Makery is that kids can start with the same scrap and then use their own creativity to transform their idea into a reality. In the photo above we have two girls who both started with a CD disc as their inspiration.
The Makery is the perfect example of an environment where kids are able to truly express themselves. With our large scrap yard and our friendly staff the children are able to make incredible and unique creations like the ones featured in this photo. If you would like to stop by and open up your mind to all the possibilities our scrap yard has to offer, the Makery is open from 10 to 12:30pm and 2 to 5pm. We can’t wait to see you soon!
This morning in the Makery we had a fun Valentines Day event to help visitors prepare for the upcoming celebrations. If you would like help making a Valentines Day card or if you want to come and check out all of the creative ideas, stop by the Makery this Thursday or Friday in the morning! During the beginning of the new year Kidzu has opened many new and exciting exhibits in the museum. One of my favorite new features is the Zoom Wall! The Zoom Wall helps kids learn about gravity, velocity, and acceleration as they play with moving vehicles. Come stop by Kidzu and check out this new exhibit!
Last week in the Makery we were focusing on duration. Makery fellows and visitors worked together to build this amazing clock tower! Check out some of the clocks that were created for the clock tower. My favorite is the square root clock. What is your favorite?
Over the past weekend we had an amazing Mix it Up in the Makery program featuring UNC’s Program in Humanities. The Makery was lucky enough to have Rachel Jones Schaevitz come in and teach children how colors can make you feel. After a lesson in the different emotions that colors can generate, kids created their own signs for Kidzu. There were many unique signs and it was amazing to see everyone using what they learned about colors and images to create beautiful signs. During this program Makery visitors also participated in color chemistry science demonstrations run by Makery Fellows. At the Makery we love to experiment with technology and create new and exciting programs. Check out one of the videos from the STEAM’D Up department! If you are interested in participating in one of the STEAM’D Up programs you can stop by the Makery on Wednesday and Thursday from 2:00pm to 5:00pm to experience the unique program of the week.
As the presidential election primaries draw closer, Kidzu is promoting the importance of voting! If you want to vote on topics that you feel are important, come stop by Kudzu’s voting booth. This voting booth is located right outside the Makery and it is equipped to help you give your anonymous opinion on some very interesting topics!
