Makery Masterpiece : Giacometti sculptures

Today in the Makery we made sculptures resembling the talented artist Giacometti. Kids twisted and transformed tin foil into human figures and other unique sculpture shapes. They did this while having fun and learning about the Italian and Swiss artist Alberto Giacometti! Come in next Thursday for the new Makery Masterpiece event! We will be learning about Frank Stella and his amazing canvases!

Throwback Thursday: Jeannette Brossart

In our last Mix It Up in the Makery we had artist Jeannette Brossart visit Kidzu and help create an amazing sculpture out of school supplies. If you have been to the Makery before you have probably seen some of Brossart’s previous work. She was the artist who created the F out of crayons that is hanging in the back of the Makery on the wall. If you have not seen this before I suggest that you find it on your next visit, it is amazing! During her most recent visit she worked with children to create a M in the similar fashion as the F. While both works of art use crayons to portray an image there are subtle differences between the two pieces and how the crayons were placed into the art. Come to the Makery and compare the two pieces! Stay informed with Kidzu to find out how to get involved with the next Mix It Up event!

What can you create?

The Makery is about learning through creation. We want to see you to come up with an idea, draw out the blueprints, and put your imagination to work. Recently in the Makery we had a group of kids create this amazing castle. It is large enough to crawl inside and has working drawstring doors. Come to the Makery so you too can create your own amazing contraption. We can’t wait to see what the next great invention will be!

Meet George!

George is our Makery skeleton. He is a replica of the human body.

Newborn babies have 260 bones in their bodies but as they grow-up some of their bones grow together.  By the time you turn 30-years-old, you’ll only have 206 bones left – just like George!

How old are you? Do you have more, less, or the same number of bones as George?

George may be a little scary at first, but he is the nicest skeleton I know. He absolutely loves it when people make clothes and decorations for him so be sure to stop by the Makery soon to make him an extra special skeleton creation!

Throwback Thursday: Mix it Up with Sandra Elliot!

Way back in May 2015, the Makery was excited to welcome Sandra Elliot, a Chapel Hill based artist, to share her artwork and painting expertise with our visitors for Mix it Up in the Makery! After introducing herself and sharing her creative process, Ms. Elliot took our visitors on a tactile tour around the museum where many of her paintings are on display. See if you can find all 3 of them on your next visit!

Full of Ms. Elliot’s knowledge, our visitors were excited to get back to the Makery and get painting! In the pictures above, you can see a few of our littlest visitors enjoying the bright colors and designs, inspired a la Sandra Elliot.

Mix it Up in the Makery happens most weekends and features local guest artists. Check the Makery calendar for our upcoming events!

Discovering Green Thumbs

The Makery@Kidzu has been having a great summer learning about the different properties of HEAT. From pollination, to sunlight, to infrared, the biggest chunk of our time has been spent looking at sunlight and its affect on everything around us!

During this STEAM’D Up Art & Design program, as part of pollinator week, visitors learned about landscape design by digging in and finding their own green thumbs. To begin, program participants helped plant mason jar terrariums with fresh herbs and vegetables to become part of a living exhibit in Kidzu. As these plants begin to grow, we’ll get to use them at programs like Market to Market! Take a look around the museum and see if you can find where our new indoor garden is growing!

After giving a big helping hand with the exhibit garden, visitors got a chance to start their own garden by planting their own herbs in self-decorated pots. If you had a chance to participate in this program, we’d love for you to send us a picture of your plant growing strong in the sun at home! Send a picture and description to makeryatkidzu@gmail.com and who knows, it might just become our newest blog post!

Tinkering at the Tinker Table

Our Tinker Table has come alive these past few weeks, keeping visitors, parents, and staff alike busy with building, creating, and experimenting. Currently on rotation at the Tinker Table, our youngest visitors have enjoyed building with the giant lego blocks, as well as our ever popular Straws & Connectors. One day, our team even built a tower all the way up to the ceiling! Can you guess how tall that was?

In addition to building, we’ve had fun playing with the Neo Track set, setting up race tracks for cars that drive themselves, as well as constructing our own cars out of legos. Stop by the Tinker Table at your next visit to see what we play with next!
