Over the past weekend we had an exciting Mix It Up in the Makery with the Chapel Hill Fire Department! We explored the importance of hydraulic power through valves, hoses, fire ladders, & our very own fire hydrant. We also experimented with chemicals to test out endothermic and exothermic reactions with household items. At the end of the day we got to have a long talk with local fire fighters as they explained fire safety and answered our fire questions.
There is no limit to how big your creations can be when you are in the Makery. One of our visitors turned herself into a car! She even had a working steering wheel. If you want to be a car, come into the Makery today!
The education department at Kidzu hosted a Teacher Appreciation DIY Microscope Workshop. During the program we built microscopes from house hold materials and used our own mobile phones to create working microscopes. Participants used their own microscopes to explore the tiny world around us. Teachers from the schools in our community joined us at Kidzu to discuss and learn how to make science more accessible in the classroom. We had a few girls visit the Makery with hopes of becoming engineers. They designed and built a ferris wheel using K’Nex. It was able to spin in a circle and hold objects as it moved in a circle. Come visit the Makery to create your own mobile structure.
You can come into Kidzu and create your own inventions using the tools at our workstations. We have seen many creations come from children working in the Makery and some of our favorites come from the workstations. In the picture above we had a Makery visitor create his own dump truck! This weekend we had an exciting Makery Masterpiece event. We learned about creating mosaics using beans, candy, and clay. We loved watching different generations help each other learn and grow through fun and creative activities. Don’t miss the next Makery Masterpiece event!
In the Makery we have a giant scrapyard full of surprise materials. You can come into the Makery and use any of the materials to make your own creations. Once you make an invention ask a Makery fellow to take a picture and you can be featured on the Makery blog!

Funded in part through the National Science Foundation, UNC Biology Professor Bob Goldstein will lead teachers through a simple DIY workshop to build a high quality, low cost Smartphone/iPad Digital Microscope. Participants will take the microscopes back to the classrooms and use them to show microscopic views of insets, cells, matter or whatever your classroom scientists desire!
