American Dance Festival: Creative Movement with Gaspard Louis & Osei Appiagyei

Kidzu will be hosting a special workshop on June 22nd. We will be partnering with the American Dance Festival to celebrate creative movement with Gaspard Louis & Osei Appiagyei. In this workshop, young students will explore basic elements of dance and choreography such as shape, rhythm, gesture and tempo. We will explore the idea of using movement for expression and storytelling, as well as how to relate music to movement. Free on the University Place Center Stage! This program will be on Wednesday, June 22 at 10:30am.

Makery Masterpiece with Damien Hirst

Butterflies are fluttering into the Makery this week! Join us as we design and create our own Makery Masterpiece at 10 am using symmetry found in butterflies’ wings and explore the work of British artist, Damien Hirst. Later, get STEAM’D UP from 2-5 pm and explore the life cycle of butterflies in the Makery. You will be able to tell the story of a butterfly’s life with your very own take home booklet!

Mix It Up in the Makery with the Chapel Hill Fire Fighters!

Over the past weekend we had an exciting Mix It Up in the Makery with the Chapel Hill Fire Department! We explored the importance of hydraulic power through valves, hoses, fire ladders, & our very own fire hydrant. We also experimented with chemicals to test out endothermic and exothermic reactions with household items. At the end of the day we got to have a long talk with local fire fighters as they explained fire safety and answered our fire questions.

Microscopes made of house hold materials!

The education department at Kidzu hosted a Teacher Appreciation DIY Microscope Workshop.  During the program we built microscopes from house hold materials and used our own mobile phones to create working microscopes.  Participants used their own microscopes to explore the tiny world around us.  Teachers from the schools in our community joined us at Kidzu to discuss and learn how to make science more accessible in the classroom. Creating Spinning Structures!

We had a few girls visit the Makery with hopes of becoming engineers. They designed and built a ferris wheel using K’Nex. It was able to spin in a circle and hold objects as it moved in a circle. Come visit the Makery to create your own mobile structure.
